Chapwani Private Island is a lovely little island with a private untouched beach, a beautiful reef filled with starfish and multi-coloured corals, and surrounded by the crystal blue ocean.
Chapwani Island is just 5 hectares in size, and is just 15 minutes away from Stone Town, by boat.
With limited accommodation options on Chapwani, you’ll never have to share this exclusive resort with more than a handful of other guests. Just relax and enjoy personalised service in a real oasis of peace and quiet.
The emphasis on Chapwani Island is around pure relaxation in an unspoiled, romantic environment. You won’t find any telephones or televisions in the rooms, allowing you to enjoy the natural sounds and rare tropical scenery in peace.
Just 15 minutes from Stone Town, by boat
Very reasonable accommodation on a private island
The woods and groves which cover the island are full of interesting creatures... from fruit bats to little bucks
Perfect for parties or weddings looking to hire their own private paradise island
There are 2 new canvas tents that will make you feel like you're on a beach safari
There is a 2 room family villa with its own plunge pool
The rooms are simply furnished, with no air conditioning
Noise can drift over from Stone Town at night
Each bungalow is divided into 2 separate rooms, you can feel quite close to your neighbours
Each room in Chapwani evokes the Zanzibarian style of elegance and simplicity: high pointed makuti roofs with wooden beams, ceiling fans and brightly coloured materials.
There are ten rooms, laid out in 5 bandas overlooking the sea, as well as 2 private (and romantic!) tents; all with a canopy bed and mosquito net, and a terrace leading onto the beach.
There is now also the recently completed Sunset Villa, which offers a different concept of accommodation on the island: it is also located on the beach front, but is secluded in a private area… and it will either work as a suite for a couple with a spacious bedroom, sitting room and an open terrace – or as a family villa.
Guests staying in the villa are offered the possibility of having a butler service, or they may choose to enjoy the restaurant and bar with the other guests.
The Swimming Poo
The swimming pool is filled with sea water so as to not disturb the ecosystem of the island. Situated in a splendid palm grove overlooking the sea, the pool invites you to dive in and relax, whilst enjoying a cool sea breeze.
The Boutique
The boutique offers local craftwork, clothes, and accessories like frames, bags and pareos. The shop is run entirely by the staff and the profits supplement their income.
Massage
Relax your muscles and mind with an unforgettable massage using oils and local essences to caress mind and body.
The airy restaurant overlooks the sea, and is situated in the centre of the resort. It’s wood and makuti structure is in keeping with traditional local architecture.
The dining specialties are based on seafood, with a selection of recipes depending on the catch of the day. The cuisine is respectful of the territory, knowingly revised by the cooks of the island, who are overseen by an Italian chef.
Meals can also be served exclusively at the edge of the pool or on the terrace of your bungalow, where the panorama and flavours combine harmoniously to create an unforgettable experience.
The bar is situated in the area adjacent to the restaurant, and is divided into various corners, all strategically placed and offering comfortable sofas with brightly coloured cushions and areas to relax in.
The bar serves thirst-quenching tropical cocktails made with fresh fruit, and at the end of the day the aperitifs and heavenly cocktails will ensure some unforgettable sunsets!
Just 15 minutes by boat from Zanzibar Town, Chapwani is a small private paradise, where the friendly staff will ensure that you have an unforgettable stay. There is a free boat service every morning at 10am, which leaves the island for Zanzibar Town and returns at 13.30.
If you would prefer to be more free and autonomous, Chapwani can organise transport at any other time during the day, for a nominal fee.
Chapwani is happy to organize day tours to the historical Stone Town and the Street of the Spices, ensuring that you enjoy the never-ending beauties this land holds in store for you! Amongst some of the most interesting places to visit are the ancient Persian Baths, the Portuguese Fort, the Palace of Wonders, the old slave market, the Jamituri gardens and the house of Livingstone.
The tropical forest of Jozani, situated in the south of the island, is a protected area where the Red Colombo of Kirk, an endemic species of monkey close to extinction, lives. Red Mahogany, Ebony plants, numerous varieties of palm trees rise up in dense bloom, creating a perfect and protected world where the tropical jungle becomes master.
During your stay you will also have the chance to go off and discover the old spice plantations, and to learn the therapeutic and culinary properties of the Zanzibar Spices.
Chapwani has at its disposal a typical local boat, built by the local Zanzibar shipwrights, which will take you out on fantastic excursions to discover the wonderful deep seas, the sandbanks with their packed sea bird colonies and little islands adjacent to Chapwani – such as Prison Island. (In the old days, a forced dwelling for slaves, then a quarantine zone, and today a tourist destination and home to some giant turtles which come from the colony of Aldabra in the Seychelles.)
Spending a wonderful day with Chapwani’s fishermen is an activity that very rarely disappoints, and regular catches are almost guaranteed.
Snorkeling equipment is provided free of charge on Chapwani Island, and the coral reef – a natural wonder to be protected and preserved – forms an eco-system that must be explored!
For scuba diving, Chapwani Island will arrange, with a local diving school, to take you to discover the crystal blue waters of Zanzibar.
The owners of Chapwani are committed to supporting and developing the island, respecting the basic principles of eco-tourism. They are proud to be an example of how support and conservation of environmental integrity can be upheld when running a resort.
All rooms are equipped with a solar system which provides hot water, and together with the sea water swimming pool and the planned photovoltaic system, will make the island even more eco-compatible.
Chapwani offers home-grown produce to their guests, eggs from the chickens that are kept on the island, and fish brought directly from the fishermen to the grill.
During your stay you will be able to explore the island, appreciating the rich flora and fauna. Following the nature trail you will pass through open spaces and places rich in vegetation; along the banks of the inland lake, you will be able to spot white herons and – hidden in the bush – a community of dik dik.
With a bit of luck, the gardeners will be able to show you the huge, shy coconut crabs – a protected species that is heading for extinction. A couple of eagles have chosen Chapwani as their dwelling and numerous hermit crabs populate the beach. At low tide there is a lovely show of starfish immersed in the coral reef which surrounds the island, and various little natural pools that are rich in marine life.
If you are looking for a really special wedding in Zanzibar, then let your dreams come true at Chapwani!
