We love the James Bond-style arrival by speed boat to this remote lodge!

A diver's paradise... for both scuba diving and snorkeling

There's a beautiful spa on site, as well as a stunning pool with an unbeatable ocean views

Strong emphasis on sustainability and social upliftment, without compromising on service

Fundu Lagoon is a legendary property. It offers a very special combination of complete privacy - if this is what you are looking for - or very social evenings at the jetty bar... where many friendships are formed, and where it feels like one is part of the Fundu family.

The beach is nice - but not breathtaking - although there are daily excursions by boat to the fabulous beach at Misali Island.

Fundu's remote location may not suit everybody

If you're not a nature lover, this may not be the right choice for you... as you might be visited by geckos and bush babies!

There are 18 rooms, consisting of canvas tents set under makuti or thatch roofs on wooden decks, all with views over the sea. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and both indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each also has an en-suite bathroom with a fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin.

The rooms are connected to the main buildings by wooden walkways or paths through indigenous forest. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront and the remaining on the hillside, which have wide views over the lagoon.

Two of the 18 rooms are Suites, with their own private chill out deck and plunge pool, and four are Superior Suites which also have an extensive indoor and outdoor lounge space and mezzanine platform.

Fundu Lagoon offers 2 categories of rooms:

8 Hillside rooms (standard bungalows)
These rooms are located on the hillside, and enjoy privacy, as well as panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and a cooling breeze. Decks accommodate a sofa and sun loungers.

4 Beachfront rooms (standard bungalows)
These rooms are allocated on the beach, so guests can stroll straight from their bungalow onto the beach. Each bungalow has two sun loungers at the front, on the beach – as well as a small private deck.

All suites have private plunge pools. The superior suites offer more spacious accommodation, including 2 private terraces and a super-sized plunge pool.

1 x Beachfront Suite
Situated right on the beach, this bungalow has an extensive private deck with a sunken seating area for relaxing or reading and a plunge pool.

1 x Jungle Suite
This bungalow offers the most privacy, set slightly back from the beach in the trees. It also has an extensive private deck with an elevated seating area for relaxing or reading, as well as a plunge pool.

4 x Superior Suites
The largest of the living spaces at Fundu Lagoon, these extensive suites offer deluxe accommodation incorporating a stylish bedroom and an open plan living area. The spacious outside deck area has a plunge pool.

Fundu Lagoon is situated on Pemba Island, which is part of the Zanzibar archipelago and lays to the north of its larger, better known sister island, Unguja. The lodge is located on a remote and beautiful beach on the southwestern side of Pemba, and is only accessible by boat.

Fundu Lagoon is the epitome of a “bare foot paradise” with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. It is a place for guests to relax and unwind in casual, yet stylish surroundings. For the ultimate in relaxation and stress relief you can visit the treatment room where a variety of massage and beauty therapies are available.

Fundu Lagoon’s main lodge is built under thatch and is large and airy and overlooks the sea. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the main dining area or at the jetty bar with a three-course lunch and dinner, all with a choice of dishes of international standard. Some meals will be served on the white sandy beach. There are 3 bars… one of which is situated a third of the way along a long jetty, which stretches way out into the sea.

There’s something rather special about gazing out over the Indian Ocean while savouring freshly picked fruit and vegetables from the nearby villages or fish from the surrounding waters. Fundu Lagoon aims to source as much as possible locally. Throw in a refreshing sea breeze to the mix and it’s akin to being shipwrecked on a tropical island – in a totally civilized manner.

The cuisine is a fusion of Swahili and international, with a choice of dishes. Meals are served in the main restaurant and the pool bar on a daily basis, with light bites or a three-course lunch and dinner. Each week there is a beach BBQ, with a bonfire under the stars and food cooked to order, as well as a Swahili-themed dinner on the jetty with a buffet and convivial atmosphere.

The three bars at Fundu lagoon serve a range of fresh juices, wines, beers and cocktails.

For sundowners, head to the jetty bar, where staff will also be on hand to arrange activities for the coming days, according to the weather forecast.

The Indian Ocean that surrounds Pemba features some of the best snorkelling and diving sites in the world. Shallow coral lagoons drop off to spectacular depths supporting a vast range of marine life. Fundu’s Dive 710 is certified as a ‘PADI 5-star Dive Resort‘. Dive 710 is staffed by an experienced team that has vast local knowledge about the area and their powerful dive boats ensure that all the sites of Pemba are within easy reach.

Fundu Lagoon has everything you need to enjoy the Indian Ocean, from wakeboarding to windsurfing, kayaking or simply strolling along the peaceful shoreline, where it is lovely to watch the Mamas and kids collecting clams or just passing by… and if you are lucky, you might see the local fishermen bringing in their daily catch.

Nearby there is a paradise beach at Misali Island, a short boat trip away and inside the protected marine conservation area. The only disturbance to these white sand beaches is by green and hawksbill turtles. It is an ideal and relaxing day out with palm trees fringing the white sands and offering shady picnic spots. The warm turquoise shallows are ideal for snorkelling amongst the brightly coloured reef fish.

Fundu’s fishing excursion offers two options: a half-day trip lasting approximately 4-5 hours, and a full-day trip spanning 9-10 hours, complete with a provided lunch. (Please note that the duration of the trip may vary due to weather conditions.) The primary focus is on big game fishing, and any catches made will be brought back to Fundu’s kitchen, where the chef will prepare them to your liking.

Fundu Lagoon’s spa has a variety of treatments available – please ask us for more information and we’ll send you full details!

The best way to visit Pemba Island is by light aircraft charter or schedule flight. (There is also a ferry service, but this is not always reliable.) After arriving at Chake Cake airport, there is a short vehicle ride to Wesha Port on a newly built tar road, which takes approximately 20 minutes. A private speedboat will then transfer you from Wesha Port to Fundu Lagoon (20-25 minutes).

The best weather is between December and March and again from July to early November, with the optimum months being July through to September.
